Gabrieleno/Tongva

The Gabrieleno/Tongva Recognition Project focused on the historical, political, and legal research necessary for the Gabrieleno/Tongva Nation’s petition for federal recognition, pursuant to federal guidelines. This project was funded by a grant awarded to the Gabrieleno/Tongva Nation from Administration for Native Americans (ANA), under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Research was conducted at the National Archives regional repositories, university libraries, and other repositories of archival documents. Frequent contact with tribal community members was an essential element of the project. Community members were encouraged to participate in the project. On July 24, 2001, Congresswoman Hilda Solis introduced H.R. 2619 to reaffirm the status of the Gabrieleno/Tongva Nation. The bill was drafted by students in UCLA’s Tribal Legal Development Clinic. This project ended in July, 2002.
