Working with Indigenous Communities for 3D Digitization and Replication of Cultural Heritage Items: R. Eric Hollinger, Ph.D., Tribal Liaison, Repatriation Program, Smithsonian Institution
3D digitization and replication of cultural objects is an emerging domain for museums and Indigenous communities working together to explore shared interests. The Smithsonian Institution, led by the National Museum of Natural History’s Repatriation Office, has pioneered this effort through collaborations with communities including Native American tribes, Alaskan Native Villages and clans, and Indigenous groups in Canada and Europe. Consultation in these projects has resulted in pushing the boundaries of conventional museum practices to meet community requests by employing rapidly emerging tech to aid cultural preservation, restoration, and education. A number of case studies of this work will be shared and discussed.
