SUMMARY:Film Screening: 499 and Q&A with Director Rodrigo Reyes
DESCRIPTION:Thursday, May 27, 2021\n1 PM PDT\nZoom\nRegister for live Q&A HERE ( https://ucla.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_LdE6pM8kQRuNO4daAhj4Cw )\nThis is the same event registration as 1521: Perspectivas Indígenas Cinco Siglos Después event ( https://www.aisc.ucla.edu/events/1521.aspx )\n Free and open to the public\nTo commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Spanish Conquest of Mexico, director Rodrigo Reyes offers a bold, hybrid cinema experience, mixing non-fictional and performative elements with components of a road movie. Through the eyes of a ghostly conquistador, Reyes recreates Hernán Cortez’s epic journey from the coasts of Veracruz to the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City. As the anachronistic fictional character interacts with real victims of Mexico’s failed drug wars, the filmmaker portrays the country’s current humanitarian crisis as part of a brutal and unfinished colonial project, still in motion, 499 years later.\n**Link to watch the film will be provided during the 1521: Perspectivas Indígenas Cinco Siglos Después event ( https://www.aisc.ucla.edu/events/1521.aspx )**\nCo-sponsored by the UCLA Latin American Institute, UCLA Center for Mexican Studies, UCLA Department of History, and UCLA American Indian Studies Center.\n
