DESCRIPTION:\nWednesday, February 19, 2020\n12–1:30 PM\nRolfe 2125\nRSVP: http://bit.ly/WendySmythe\nIntersections of AIS & STEM presents “Fostering Inclusive Geoscience Research & Education Practices,” a talk by Dr. Wendy Smythe, who has worked over the last 12 years to couple Traditional Knowledge (TK) with Geoscience Research and Education to increase the number of Native students in STEM and computer science by developing a culturally focused science curriculum that integrates indigenous language, culture and protocol. In this talk, she will discuss how integrating TK into STEM allows for researchers to better observe ecosystems from a holistic view, and how TK can help to empower future generations of Native scholars.\nWendy Smythe, Ph.D. is Alaska Native Haida from Hydaburg, Alaska. Her Haida name is K’ah Skaahluwaa (laughing lady), from the Xáadas (Haida) clan of Sdast’ aas (Fish egg house). She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), where she holds a joint appointment between the Departments of American Indian Studies and Earth & Environmental Sciences.\nIntersections of AIS & STEM is an event series highlighting the science of Indigenous knowledges. Organized by the UCLA American Indian Studies IDP.\nThis event is co-sponsored by the UCLA American Indian Studies Center and the Center for Diverse Leadership in Science.\n \nUCLA is a tobacco-free campus.
